Step 1: Cut your top cotton fabric to approx. 14 inches x 20 inches. Depending on how many place mats you want to make, will depend on how many of these you want to cut. Example, I made 4 place mats and ended up cutting a total of 4 pieces that measure 14 inches x 20 inches.
Step 5: To make your corners round, use anything you have that is round, I used a lid to a glitter bottle and use your tracing pen to trace around each corner of the place mat to make the corners rounded. Use your scissors to trim the corner. Once finished, set aside.
Ruffled Edge
Step 6: For each place mat, I cut 3 strips of my purple fabric, 3 ½ inches x WOF. (Width of fabric)
Step 7: Sew each strip together and iron seams open. I finished each edge off by folding in and top stitching. This way, now raw edge is showing.
Step 8: Fold your fabric in ½ and iron. This will create a long strip of approx. 1.75 inches x however long you made your strip.
Step 9: Use a needle and thread to gather the raw edge to create the ruffle. If you have a ruffle foot for your sewing machine, you can use it to create your ruffle.
Step 10: Use your pins or clips to clip your ruffle to the top of your place mat. Raw edge to Raw Edge. Overlap the beginning and the ending slightly.
Step 11: Use your sewing machine and sew a 1/8th of an inch seam allowance all the way around. This helps hold your ruffle in place.
Step 12: Take your backing fabric and lay right sides together to the top piece. Sew around and remember to leave approx. a 2-3 inch opening to turn your piece inside out.
Step 13: Turn your place mat inside out. Tugging gently at the ruffle piece to get the edges out.
Step 14: Fold the opening from the back inside, and either hand-stitch the opening closed or use your sewing machine to close the edge.
Step 15: Iron your place mat and then sew a top stitch.
